Hey Preppers, and Comms Ops. Thanks for checking out the blog. Today I am going to be discussing something that has been on my mind a lot lately, the need for a Prepper to get a Ham Radio license.

1st off I understand that Preppers are an independent bunch who would rather have minimal contact with the Powers that be, I also understand that Preppers need communications before, during and after an SHTF situation. A good number of Preppers have gone out and purchased a Baofeng dual band radio of one flavor or another, and that is fantastic! When asked if they are going to get their Amateur radio license there are some who wholeheartedly embrace the idea. However, there are some who say “I don’t wanna be on a government list. And when the SHTF a license is not gonna matter.” And they would be correct in the latter statement, but will they actually know how to use the Baofeng? How to program it? Or what frequencies to use for communicating? Or that PL tones are not truly secure and only block out other’s communications, but they can still hear yours?

Probably not, and that is the issue today. As a Prepper I know that we all need food, water, shelter and 1st aid; I also know that we need comms for more than our local teams. We need to know what is happening outside of our area, and that ain’t gonna happen with the 2 meter/70 Cm dual band radios. We as preppers NEED to get our licenses before any shtf situation so that we can practice with our communications gear. Even as a technician class license holder you have HF voice privileges in the 10-meter band from 28.300 to 28.500 MHz, that my friends is long distance comms like the continental USA, Canada, South America, and maybe Europe if the conditions are right, as a TECH, but you need your license to use these frequencies with any amount of certainty that your communications will go through. Getting a license means that you have learned to use your comms gear, it also means that you have the knowledge to build an antenna that will get your signal out on the airwaves.

I am an Amateur Radio Op, and have been for the last 13 years, do I know everything there is to know about Ham radio? Hell no. But what I do know I will willingly share with you. I want all preppers to be prepared for all eventualities, that especially includes Comms. That’s all for now, this is K0MRD, your Radio Prepper signing off. 73!
